Mailing Classes Offered in the United States

USPS offers various mailing classes tailored to different needs and budgets.

First-Class Mail®

  • First-Class Mail® service is the least expensive, most immediate option for mailing postcards, letters, and large envelopes (flats)
  • USPS provides IMB which is a 65-bar Postal Service™ barcode used to sort and track letters and flats. This includes both First-Class and Standard Mail, as the barcode identifiers specify the mail class and service level requested.

USPS Marketing Mail (Second Class)

  • USPS Marketing Mailing must meet a minimum quantity of 200 pieces or 50 pounds of mail.
  • Tracking number will be available for standard class only if the number of mailings is more than 500.

Certified Mail®

  • Certified Mail is a USPS service that helps you mail securely throughout the US.
  • Certified Mail® provides proof that you mailed an item at the post office and includes a tracking number that allows you to monitor its progress through the USPS system.
  • Users can track Certified Mail online to see when it was accepted, processed, and delivered to the recipient's address.
  • Certified Mail provides confirmation of delivery, but it does not include proof of who received it. It just confirms that the item was delivered to the recipient's address.

Certified Mail® with Return Receipt

  • Certified Mail® with Return Receipt is useful for legal documents, important contracts, or any correspondence where you need documented confirmation of delivery with the recipient's signature.
  • Like Certified Mail, this service provides proof that you sent an item from the post office, including a tracking number.
  • It includes all the tracking features of Certified Mail, allowing users to monitor the item's journey.
  • Return Receipt is an additional service where the recipient or an authorized agent must sign a receipt upon delivery. The signature is then returned to the sender by mail, providing proof of delivery with the recipient's signature.
  • Alternatively, Electronic Return Receipt (ERR) provides proof of delivery for Certified Mail items sent through the USPS. Instead of receiving a physical signature on a paper receipt, ERR captures the recipient’s signature electronically. This signature, along with other delivery details, is then provided to the sender electronically rather than through traditional mail.
